Bocce ball can be a fantastic source of fun. But like any other game, the court requires regular maintenance to preserve optimal play conditions. Otherwise, any rough or uneven texture can prevent the ball from reaching its destination.

Coming up are a few handy tips for maintaining your backyard bocce court.

How to maintain a bocce ball court

Keeping a bocce court in tip-top shape requires several crucial tasks. They can be divided into two groups: daily and periodical jobs.

Daily maintenance

Before watering and after each bocce session, make sure to brush the court with a drag broom. Additionally, wet the surface thoroughly and evenly to maintain stability and keep dust at bay. New courts could also use some rolling. It provides a firmer texture, greater moisture retention, faster drying, and less erosion.

Periodical maintenance

Bocce courts are prone to indents or depressions, especially if used intensively. These problems are evident when liquid lingers in certain zones after watering. You can highlight low sections by placing a string line across the court. Patching is the go-to method for addressing these indentations, and here’s how to perform the fix:

  • Scarify low areas using a lute. It allows the new materials to bind to the court.

  • Spread Har-Tru material onto the low surfaces.

  • Level the material using straight-edge instruments.

  • Add water.

  • Roll the area.

  • Repeat the steps for the deep sections.

Scraping dead material

Another maintenance job on bocce courts is addressing the Har-Tru granules that have worked themselves into the surface. These particles are beneficial, but only in limited amounts.

Large granules (also known as dead substances) in significant amounts can lead to ball bouncing and impair your play. The granules are gray and tend to build up in certain sections.

To tackle dead material, use a flat-edge tool to scrape it into a pile and eliminate it from the surface. Just be careful not to dig into regular court sections when getting rid of the unwanted substances.

Topdressing

Bocce courts lose material eventually due to rain, wind, watering, and play. To properly maintain their surface, you’ll need to apply the topdressing once a year. Here’s how to do it:

  • Dry the court thoroughly.

  • Scarify the surface with a lute or tow scarifier.

  • Patch depressions and low areas.

  • Use a spreader to apply a court surfacing material.

  • Level the substance with a ladder or another straight-edge tool.

  • Add water.

  • Roll the surface.

When applying the topdressing, you have two choices: one bag of material per month several times a year or 10 to 12 bags once a year.

To determine the ideal option, consult a local bocce court specialist. With years of experience under their belt, they can recommend the optimal amount and provide more valuable maintenance insights.
